A march taken out by activists of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) at Perambra here on Monday evening turned violent.

The march was organised in protest against the attack on AIYF State unit president G. Krishnaprasad and other leaders allegedly by Youth Congress workers in Thiruvananthapuram.

Several persons, including a civil police officer (CPO), six Congress workers, and two AIYF activists sustained injuries in the melee. Both the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front have called a hartal from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Perambra grama panchayat on Tuesday.

The trouble started after a group attempted to disrupt the protest march near the Perambra bus-station at around 5.30 p.m. The annoyed AIYF activists then attacked Youth Congress activists. Then, activists of the Youth Congress and the Congress took out a march to register their protest against the attack.

A few Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists joined the AIYF protest and attacked the Congress activists.

The police had a difficult time in controlling the hostile groups.

K. Vinod, CPO attached to the Perambra police station, and AIYF activists K. Babu and Bejoy Aavala have been admitted to the Perambra taluk government hospital.

The injured Congress activists were P.K. Ragesh, Rajan Marutheri, Rajeesh Makkuzhi, V.D. Vinoj, Mavilakandi Shakkeer, and Arun Kizhakkel.
