The Revenue Department has started collecting details of vehicles involved in police cases that are parked on the premises of police stations in the district.
The details are being sought to categorise all such vehicles immediately, and hand them over to the owners concerned after examining the nature of the cases. The vehicles that are not taken back by the owners will be moved to a new dumping yard permanently.
Discussions are on to identify land for the dumping yard, and make it available to the police to leave the vehicles that have been abandoned by the owners. The land will be finalised after getting a final picture of the number of such vehicles in the district.
Speaking to The Hindu here, District Collector C.A. Latha said she had sought the detailed list from the higher-ups in the police. “Some police officers have already forwarded the details and the process is on,” she said.
During the tenure of the previous City Police Commissioner, an official discussion had been held with the senior revenue officers to identify a permanent spot in the city for dumping the vehicles. Nearly 10 acres of land in Mavoor village too had been identified. But the plan hit a roadblock after some environmental organisations raised objections, citing the ecological importance of the site.
Ms. Latha said steps would be taken to identify a new site. “Whatever be the situation, it is a must to remove all the old vehicles from the police station premises and dump them in another spot as per court orders,” she said.
When contacted, senior police officers confirmed that Station House Officers had been issued directions to prepare the vehicle list at the earliest.
“The case details of each vehicle will be attached. This will help the district administration get an idea of the actual area required for the dumping yard,” they said.
