September 04, 2013 01:09 pm | Updated June 02, 2016 09:11 am IST - MALAPPURAM:

A hartal called by the SDPI in Kozhikode on Tuesday, demanding the formation of a new district by bifurcating Malappuram, was near-total but marked by sporadic violence.

Private vehicles were blocked at several places as public transport vehicles kept off the road. Shops and business establishments across the district remained closed.

Clashes

Clashes took place at Angadipuram, Tirur, Karinkallathani, Pookkottur, Aravankara, Makkaraparamba, Nilambur, and Kuttippuram when hartal supporters tried to block the vehicles and forcibly close some shops. Several KSRTC buses abandoned their services after they were blocked at several places.

However, some KSRTC buses plied between Thrissur and Kozhikode with the help of the Highway Police.

Police registered a case against several SDPI men at Angadipuram in connection with an attack on a KSRTC bus.

Beaten up

An ambulance driver was beaten up at Chungathara by a gang.

The attendance at government offices was considerably low.

Educational institutions did not function across the district. Calicut University postponed its examinations scheduled for Tuesday.
