May 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Kozhikode:

The two-day long fitness test of educational institution vehicles conducted by the Motor Vehicle Department and the city police came to an end in the city. Only vehicles which received the fitness certification from these two departments will be allowed to transport children from educational institutions.

According to an official, majority of the educational institution buses within the city limits have undergone the checking and they have been issued a special sticker after the examination process.

This has been a continuing process for the past couple of years, he said.

As per the official figures of the Motor Vehicle department, there are around 300 school buses in the city limits alone. Majority of them have already undergone checking. The remaining will not be allowed to carry out the service without completing the mandatory inspection procedures.

In the list of light motor vehicles, there are around 800 private vehicles currently engaged in transporting children in the city of which majority have completed the mandatory fitness test.

Some of them have also been prevented from operating further services on grounds of poor fitness.

The mandatory rules already declared by the government in the selection of drivers for academic institution buses will be implemented strictly during this academic year. Also, it will be mandatory for drivers to carry identity cards.
