A portion of the tiled roof of Varam Upper Primary School near here collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday.
One division each of classes 5, 6 and 7 were functioning in the collapsed section. Heavy rain had lashed the area overnight. However, the school authorities suspect the hands of anti-social elements behind the incident.
The Malabar Education Trust, which runs the 30-year-old school, had been maintaining the school well and it had earned fitness certificate for the building from the Education Department, they said.
Deputy Director of Education C.R. Vijayanunni, who visited the school, said the incident seemed more a handy work of anti-social elements.
The school management has filed a case with the police.
