An excise squad on Friday seized unaccounted money worth Rs.70 lakh from a 28-year-old native of Kannur. The seizure was made during a routine checking at Mukkali around 7.30 a.m.
Excise officials said the accused hailing from Kakkad in Kannur district was carrying it for a client in Kozhikode city. “The bus crew were hardly aware of the transfer. After thorough checking, the bus was allowed to proceed with other travellers,” they said.
Later, officials of the Enforcement Directorate (Kozhikode) took the man and the seized money into custody for further investigation. Officials said they were yet to get any clue on the actual source of money and the men behind the deal.
With the latest seizure, the total unaccounted money recovered by various enforcement wings from Kozhikode rural area has crossed Rs.2 crore.
Senior police officers said the entire amount would be forfeited to the State exchequer as there were several incriminating documents against the accused persons in the cases. No one would be able to go scot-free as documents were powerful enough to prove their guilt in the court, they said.
