Rs.4.5-cr facelift for SM Street

April 28, 2013 11:55 am | Updated 11:55 am IST - Kozhikode:

The District Administration on Saturday announced a revised cost estimate of Rs.4.5 crore for the renovation of the city’s iconic Sweet Meat (SM) Street.

The renovation proposals for the street has been under a cloud of doubt following strong resistance from the part of traders, many of them a part of the retail hub for several decades, against any change. Over the years, traders have expressed fears about renovation plans of the street. In his statement, District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar said the revised beautification plans had been worked out in such a way that the businesses of the traders would not be affected.

The blueprints have been prepared by architect R.K. Ramesh. The Collector said strengthening proposals for two sea bridges would be finalised with the help from the National Institute of Technology (Calicut) in June and handed over to the Tourism Department.
