The State government has sanctioned a series of coastal road development projects to promote tourism and protect fishermen’s livelihood during monsoon.

As per orders issued by the Fisheries and Ports Department, the Harbour Engineering Department will

Complete the work in one year.

Following back-to-back directions and the allotment of Rs.2.16 crore to upgrade seven arterial roads on the district’s coastline on May 16 and 17, the Fisheries Department made another allocation of Rs.47.40 lakh to the district as per a government directive on July 5.

In this latest order, the department gave the nod to start improvement work on the Katchery-Naduthuruthy Palam road in the picturesque coastal panchayat of Thalakulathur here.

As per the May 16 order, Rs.60.60 lakh was allotted for the Gurukulam Beach road connecting Valiyathodu and Cheriyathodu in Koyilandy municipality.

The order of the government also sanctioned development work on roads located in the fishing hubs of Moodadi and Chengottukavu in the Panthalayani block panchayat; Payyoli area in the Melady block panchayat; and Koyilandy municipality here.

Under this, Moodadi would see improvement on the Muthayam Beach road for Rs.12.52 lakh and the stretch from N.K. Ibrahim Peedika to Thrimukku Road will get Rs.22.77 lakh.

The government also allotted Rs.41.52 lakh for the upgrade of the Kolavipalam Fisheries road, an ecologically fragile fishing area. The Kolavipalam fishing village is a strip of land between the sea on the west and the Kottappuzha river on the east.

The Chengottukavu grama panchayat would also witness work on three of its coastal stretches — the Thuvayil Poyilkavu road, the Poyilkavu-Madakkara Road, and the Arangadath-Ezhukudikkal road. The allocations are Rs.26.36 lakh, Rs.7.85 lakh, and Rs.30 lakh, respectively.

The order on May 17 sanctioned improvement works on the coastal road linking the Beypore fishing harbour and Kozhikode city, at a cost of Rs.29 lakh.
