Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot has announced a financial aid of Rs. 19 crore for completing the upcoming Composite Regional Centre (CRC) for Persons with Disabilities at Chevayur .

The Minister made the declaration while inaugurating the construction works of the centre at a special function held at Swapnanagari, here, on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Gehlot said the Union government was planning to introduce special identity cards for persons with disabilities in the country, which would enable them to claim the benefits of various government welfare schemes.

He also congratulated the Kerala government for preparing an authentic data bank of differently-abled citizens in the State.

Explaining the vision behind the upcoming Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan), the Minister said it would strive to promote the concept of universal accessibility for all, especially for persons with disabilities. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the project on December 3. Kozhikode district too would get special funds from the government to facilitate the implementation of the concept,” he added.

“We have been extending pre-matric and post-matric scholarships to all eligible students. Also, we have requested State governments to come up with proposals ,” he said.

M.K. Raghavan, MP, chaired the inaugural function.

Minister for Panchayats and Social Justice M.K. Muneer announced the formal decision of the government to change Kozhikode to a totally-accessible destination for differently-abled citizens. A. Pradeeplumar, MLA, District panchayat president Babu Parassery and BJP district president P. Raghunath were present.
