Just four days of monsoon rain, and the district suffered a loss of Rs.1.20 crore. As per the latest figures available with the control room at the Collectorate, agriculture sector alone suffered a loss of Rs.68 lakh.
Revenue Department officials said no fewer than 40 hectares of agricultural land were hit by the incessant rain. On Wednesday alone, the department recorded an estimated loss of Rs.45.29 lakh from the sector. Loss in nearly 18 hectares of land was being assessed on Wednesday, they added.
80 housesThe areas that suffered huge loss included Valayam, Payyoli, Thuneri, Maniyoor, Balussery, Meppayoor, Keezhariyoor, Eramala, Unnikulam, and Omassery. Though there was a slight decline in rain on Wednesday, it hardly brought cheers to the farming community in the rural areas as their land still remained water-logged.
According to official figures, 80 houses were damaged in various parts of the district within four days. The loss estimated was around Rs.37 lakh. The only silver lining would be that only a few houses were fully destroyed. On Wednesday, the department confirmed partial damages to seven houses. At Payyoli, one house was destroyed fully in the rain. In Vadakara, a rented building of the Civil Supplies Department collapsed.
As part of mitigating rain-related disasters, District Collector C.A. Latha has asked all the senior revenue officials to step up vigil and coordinate the rescue activities with the local police and the Fire and Rescue Services.
The service of the district control room will be available for citizens to seek support in emergency situations.
