The Union Cabinet has sanctioned Rs.125 crore for the overall development of the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, under the Pradhan Manthri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
Kozhikode MP M. K. Raghavan told reporters here on Friday that the move was a milestone for the medical sector in Malabar. The State government will make a contribution of Rs. 25 crore towards the programme, he said.
The Kozhikode Medical College, the second in the State, is a referral hospital for people from six districts and experiences heavy rush every day in both OP and IP. The hospital has recorded the maximum number of deliveries per day in Asia. The proposal for implementing the PMSSY in the medical college was submitted in 2009.
The proposal was accepted by the Union Ministry of Finance and the Cabinet sanctioned the fund on Thursday. Overall 39 medical colleges in the country have been selected for the programme. Alappuzha is the only other medical college in Kerala to be included in this programme.
Under the PMSSY, an action plan for comprehensive development of the medical college has been recognised. The plan is to develop basic infrastructure, avail modern equipment and a new super speciality block that includes trauma care and emergency medicine departments in the first phase.
Laboratory service round the clock, imaging facility, ICU, Blood Bank, Doctors’ duty rooms and staff rooms are also included.
Special clinics for emergency medicine, family medicine, Neonatology, Immuno Haematology and Transfusion medicine and Centre Diagnostic system with Biochemistry, Pathology and Microbiology departments are part of the programme. All documents and data in the medical college will be computerised.
The college library will be upgraded by including advanced technology, referral system and more furniture.
The ICU will be strengthened. The existing super speciality block, NMCH, IMCH and the proposed super speciality block will be linked through corridor. The hospital kitchen and catering will be upgraded to the level recommended by the Medical Nutrition Therapy. The NMCH building will be renovated at a cost of Rs.8 crore while the modular operation theatre and endoscopy suit will be moved into the super speciality block. More posts will be created and staff appointed, the MP said.
