Row over RSS leaders visiting IUML office

February 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:00 am IST - Kozhikode:

A courtesy call made by RSS Kerala Prantha Karyavah P. Gopalankutty on Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders has kicked up a storm after the CPI(M) accused the Sangh Parivar of forging an unholy pact with the IUML ahead of the State Assembly polls.

The CPI(M) district secretariat alleged that the meeting smacked of an alliance between these political parties for the upcoming polls. Mr. Gopalankutty had visited the IUML’s office in Kozhikode on January 26.

The CPI(M) leaders said the IUML had been desperate to forge an unholy understanding with the RSS as it was imminent that the United Democratic Front (UDF) would be defeated in the polls. For a few votes, the IUML ignored its party workers and sacrificed secularism the party had been preaching all along.

The people of the State should be wary of such a tacit political alliance between the RSS/BJP and the UDF at a time when the BJP-led government at the Centre was against the minorities, the CPI(M) leaders said.

However, Mr. Gopalankutty termed the propaganda unleashed by CPI(M) leaders as ludicrous and said that the CPI(M) had stooped low to create an unnecessary controversy. The RSS-BJP leaders had met IUML leaders as part of its “Sambarkka Dina” programme.

Normally, the party organ defamed the RSS and BJP. However, this time, CPI(M) polit bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan by taking up the issue had made himself look foolish.

As part of the Sambarkka Dina programme, the RSS customarily met leaders of various political parties. On that day itself the RSS leaders, before meeting the IUML leaders, had met Janata Dal (United) State president M.P. Veerendrakumar.

The RSS leaders had also called CPI(M) district secretary P. Mohanan on his phone to meet him, but it was abandoned as he was attending a programme of CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at Mukkom. This was also informed by Mr. Mohanan. An attempt was made to meet CPI(M) Central secretariat member Elamaram Karim, the RSS leader said. The statement of Mr. Vijayan was only a tactic to create a confusion among the minorities with an eye on their votes, Mr. Gopalankutty added.
