The 30 acres of land at Eravathukunnu, near Govindapuram, that belongs to the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation is making headlines once again with the Corporation council set to resurvey the land and take action on those who have allegedly undertaken illegal construction on the hilly terrain.
It was Kuttiyilthazaham Councillor T.P. Koya Moideen who called the attention of the council towards the alleged illegal construction during a council meeting on Wednesday. He alleged that the hill was being destroyed in the name of constructing a road to the Model Industrial Training Centre on the hill. He said the road was unnecessary, as the centre already had proper access to the main road. He also said 5 acres of land was leased out to the Kerala Water Authority to construct a water tank a few years ago. The KWA planned to use the remaining land, around three acres, for employee quarters, which was dropped after the some interventions from the public.
The land was later reclaimed by the Corporation, though the documents are yet to be drawn. Mr. Koya Moideen demanded that the reclaimed land should be added to the V.K. Krishnamenon Smrithivanam adjacent to it. He urged the Corporation to take action against demolishing the hill to construct the road to the ITI and said a gallery and a butterfly park were being planned on the hill that was being demolished.
Mayor A.K. Premajam said there were two complaints about illegal construction at Eravathukunnu and that the Corporation would take action based on the re-survey.
Ironically, sources from the ITI said there was no road construction going on and that the dispute with the Corporation regarding boundary lines were settled a month ago under the aegis of former District Collector C.A. Latha.
