The research scholars of the University of Calicut are on warpath, for the second time in less than six months. They are staging a unique protest by occupying the Student Trap, near the University Central Library, and holding a day-night sit-in, demanding fellowships from the university. The protesters prepared food at the dharna pandhal, and said the agitation would continue until they got the fellowships.

Although the protest began on Tuesday evening, it was formally inaugurated on Wednesday morning when woman researchers accepted white roses from their children at a function.

The All Kerala Research Scholars Association (AKRSA) is spearheading the agitation.

Delivering the keynote address, social critic Kalpatta Narayanan said that the strike by the research scholars had its own dignity. He said that the campus was being degenerated to its lowest repute ever because of the policies being followed by the authorities. AKRSA unit joint secretary Ayisha Beevi presided.

A protest by research scholars in March had affected the functioning of the university central library.
