Remembering the lives that were snuffed out on road in Kozhikode

A memorial meet organised in the city on Sunday as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims-2014 was Trauma Care -Kozhikode (TRACK)’s way of urging people to work towards bringing down accident deaths.

Minister for Panchayats and Social Justice M.K. Muneer inaugurated the meet, which was mostly attended by the relatives and family members of people who were killed in various road accidents in the district.

The trauma care volunteers also paid floral tributes to the accident victims after visiting various accident spots in the city.

The details of road accident deaths released in connection with the remembrance meet said no fewer than any 332 persons lost their lives in 2014 in various accidents. Within the Kozhikode city itself, 143 persons were killed.

Organisers said their main intention of the remembrance meet was to communicate to the people over the growing negligence in the sector and the increasing number of victims. Also, it strived to highlight the role so far played by the trauma care activists for the rescue of the victims, they added.

City Police Commissioner A.V. George, Deputy Transport Commissioner Rajeev Puthalath, and patron of TRACK P.M. Janardhanan were present. K.T. Raghunath, president of TRACK, welcomed the gathering, and Dinker Karunakar, secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
