It was on September 27 in 1927 that G. Devarajan was born at Paravur, Kollam. He remains the greatest composer ever in Malayalam cinema.
On the occasion of his 87th birth anniversary, let us rewind some of the classic songs by the music director, who died in 2006. Songs that will live for ever.
“Chandrakalabham...” ( Kottaram Vilkkanundu )
This song, or rather 11 lines of sublime poetry, was written by Vayalar Rama Varma. This beautiful ode to Earth was sung with perfection by K.J. Yesudas. It is easily one of the greatest Malayalam film songs of all time.
“Rajashilpi…” ( Panchavankadu )
The song proves why some of the finest compositions of Devarajan were sung by P. Susheela.
“Ujjainiyile gayika…” ( Kadalpalam )
It was as if P. Leela had reserved her best for Devarajan.
“Innenikku pottukuthan…” ( Guruvayur Kesavan )
P. Madhuri was Devarajan’s favourite female singer. This was her best song for him, as she did full justice to what was a difficult semi-classical composition to sing.
“Madirakshi…” ( Swapnangal ).
The most sensual song in Malayalam cinema. Written by Vayalar and rendered by Yesudas and Madhuri with passion.
“Arikil…” ( Neeyethra Dhanya )
The best Malayalam song of the last 30 years. O.N.V. Kurup’s brilliantly romantic lines and immaculate rendering by Yesudas also contributed greatly to make it a classic.
“Anakha sankalpa gayike…” ( Aniyara )
May not be the most-heard of his compositions, but a masterly one, with beautiful lyrics by P. Bhaksaran.
“Indravallari…” ( Gandharvakshethram )
A melody that fills the heart with joy, right from its opening note. Another work of art he created along with Vayalar and Yesudas.
“Neelakkannukalo…” ( Kottaram Vilkkanundu )
P. Jayachandran was Devarajan’s favourite male voice after Yesudas. This song shows why. This duet with Madhuri is incredibly romantic and melodious.
“Ilavannoor matathile…” ( Kadathanattu Makkam )
Love and separation rarely found a more melodic expression. You would also find some soothingly exquisite pieces on flute in the song written by Bhaskaran and sung by Yesudas.
