The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) is launching farming training for the mentally ill as part of their rehabilitation.

The one-and-a-half acres of vacant land on the IMHANS premises will be utilised for cultivating tapioca. Around 50 National Service Scheme volunteers from Providence College and members of the ‘Niravu’ collective will help with the training, to be supported by the Social Justice Department. IMHANS authorities said the aim was to enable mentally ill people to stand on their feet without getting isolated from the mainstream.

Apart from those who attend the day-care centre recently opened at IMHANS, those at the rehabilitation centre working on the premises of Government Mental Health Centre, Kuthiravattam, will be engaged in the project.
