The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, chairman Gajendra Singh Chauhan has said that a regional centre of India's premier film institute will be set up in Kochi.

Inaugurating the 40th anniversary of the Thapasaya Kala Sahitya Vedi here on Saturday, he said that thousands of aspirants apply to the FTII every year. However, only a few talented candidates could secure admission. This was because of the limited number of seats in each course. Steps had already been taken to establish a film and television institute modelled on the Pune FTII at Guwahati.

Similarly regional centres of the institute will be set up in different States including Kerala. One of them would be definitely in Kochi. Short term courses would also be commenced at the Pune FTII shortly. Mr. Chauhan said. He said that the Malayalam film industry had contributed immensely to the growth and development of Indian cinema. Malayalam films were known for its robust screen presentations and storylines.
