Rain brings Kozhikode to a standstill

May 08, 2014 01:22 pm | Updated 01:23 pm IST - Kozhikode:

The cloudy sky that threatened to burst any time since morning in Kozhikode finally gave in around 4 p.m., resulting in incessant rain that brought the traffic in the city to a standstill. Visibility was reduced considerably and motorists were heavily depending upon the tail lights of the vehicles in front of them for direction.

At Paroppadi here, a car that slipped into the shoulder of the road subsequently fell into a nearby trench on Tuesday night. Two people, who were injured in the accident, have been admitted at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode. Retrieving the car from the trench using a recovery van created a massive traffic block on Wayanad Road for at least 15 minutes on Wednesday evening.

Wall collapses

The submerged roads too contributed to the chaos. Mavoor Road near the Mofussil bus stand remains inundated. The compound wall of the English Church has collapsed into the road, disrupting traffic.

Electricity and land phone services were disrupted at various places owing to trees getting uprooted or branches falling on the lines. The rain is expected to wreak havoc for yet another day. However, it has been a great relief from the scorching sun of May. Dried up ponds and other water bodies have been filled to some extent, solving the water crisis for the time being.
