A joint protest was organised by the Corporation anti-corruption action committee and the residents of Njeliyanparamba in front of the city Corporation on Tuesday against the council’s decision to extend by two years a contract for running the waste-treatment plant at Njeliyanparamba with Mumbai-based company IL & FS (Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd.).
The protesters demanded that the decision be repealed in view of the company being mentioned in a case registered by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) related to the sale of compost from the plant.
On Tuesday, The Hindu had carried a story pointing out the impropriety in extending the contract owing to the above said case and the difficulties faced by people residing close to the plant.
K.P. Vijayakumar of the Corporation anti-corruption campaign committee, who is also a petitioner in the case, said the protest was the beginning of a long struggle of people against the Corporation’s stand on the issue.
The protest was inaugurated by activist M.P. Moyinbabu. O.K. Koya, a resident of Njeliyanparamba who led the legal struggle against the plant, was also present.
