The District Laterite Owners Welfare Society will organise a sit-in in front of the Collectorate here on August 6 to press its demand for lifting the ban imposed on laterite quarrying in the State.

Addressing a news conference here on Friday, society president Surendran Surabhi and secretary K. Suresh said that the government had issued the ban order last month following a direction by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) seeking to obtain mandatory environment clearance for all mining and quarrying activities irrespective of the area.

Corporatisation

They said that the laterite was a minor mineral and that the NGT’s direction to get environment clearance after carrying out the Environment Impact Assessment would only help in the corporatisation of the sector.

Detrimental

As of now, the ban would be detrimental to the interest of the construction sector and would result in robbing the livelihood of several families in the State.

The government needed to intervene in the issue as possible as possible, the society members said.
