The rural police recovered five powerful homemade bombs hidden in a sack in an uninhabited plot at Narikkatteri in the limits of Nadapuram police station here on Thursday.
The bombs were recovered during a raid carried out by the Nadapuram sub-divisional team and the bomb detection and disposal squad in the morning. The raids had been carried out following the recovery of five swords from the region on Wednesday.
T.K. Rajmohan, Superintendent of Police, Kozhikode Rural, said the raids had been conducted following reports that weapons and explosive could be stockpiled in the area. The newly made bombs were covered in timber powder. These were recovered from a place less than 300 m from the spot where an explosion had occurred two years ago. Five activists of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) were killed and three others were injured while transferring bombs.
Early this month, the police recovered eight pipe-bombs concealed in the bushes at Cheeyur. The 10-cm-long bombs were made of Polyvinyl Chloride pipes filled with ammonium nitrate mixture and detonator, and were attached with a wick.
The Nadapuram police, in the last week of February, had seized 52 detonators and 100 m of fuse-wire during a raid carried out at a sandstone quarry at Vilangadu in Vanimel panchayat in the district.
Mr. Rajmohan said the raids would continue in the coming days as well. Investigators had been asked to identify potential troublemakers owing allegiance to different political parties and other outfits. If needed, the police would initiate proceedings under Section 107 (security for keeping the peace in other areas) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, he said.
Investigators are tracing and checking the mobile phone calls of suspected persons. The police would also keep a check on people infiltrating the region from other regions, including Kannur district.
