The rural police team are yet to trace Umesh Prasad Singh, the Boarder Security Force (BSF) jawan who allegedly gunned down his senior officer Ram Gopal Meena and escaped from a temporary BSF camp in Vadakara on last Friday.
According to police sources, the five-day long inquiry conducted in certain areas of Karnataka following a tip-off from some of the Vadakara natives did not help the investigating squad to make any breakthrough. “We hope to strengthen the probe from Friday as some of the investigating officers will be free by then after their election duty,” they said. During the probe, the police had come across several puzzling moments after receiving alerts from various corners on spotting strange persons and unidentified bodies.
“Though two bodies spotted from two different locations were initially suspected to be that of the accused man, it was ruled out by the BSF personnel,” said a police officer attached to the investigation team. The identification was quite difficult as the bodies were in a decomposed state, he said.
Deployed for poll duty
The 45-year-old BSF inspector was shot dead at a temporary camp set up as part of the poll security arrangements at Iringal in Vadakara.
The accused fled the spot after the incident and the reason that actually triggered incident was yet to be ascertained.
There were around 80 members at the camp set up at the Kottakkal Islamic Academy. Though the police managed to reach the spot within a short time, they were stopped at the gate following a suspicion that the accused man was still inside the camp with the weapon he had used for firing. On inspection, the weapon and the uniform he used were found abandoned near the camp.
