KOZHIKODE: The Kunnamangalam police have recovered 450 sovereigns of gold ornaments from Kollaparambil Mohammed, a native of Kannur, who was arrested two months ago for his alleged involvement in around 200 theft cases in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

The police said they could recover only 50% of ornaments stolen by the accused, whose assets in the form of movable and immovable properties were “beyond the common man’s imagination”. The ornaments were recovered from various banking firms where he had pawned them.

According to the police, Mohammed had purchased two houses, each worth ₹2 crore, in the name of his wife in Kannur district. This was in addition to several acres in his possession.

For more than a month, the man had been in police custody following the recovery of valuables he had allegedly stolen.

Mohammed, who pretended to be a real estate agent, was on a theft-spree till his arrest in the first week of September. He was produced in court on Friday.

The police said the 39-year-old was facing charges in 80 cases registered in Kannur and Kozhikode districts. He had also undergone imprisonment.

An officer of the investigation team said Mohammed was an expert in altering the crime scene to create the impression that it was the work of migrant workers. He used to write on the walls of houses in Hindi to mislead investigators.
