Protesters allege shielding of culprits in trafficking case

June 10, 2014 11:43 am | Updated 11:43 am IST - Kozhikode:

A march taken out by activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) to the camp office of Minister for Social Welfare M.K. Muneer here on Monday turned violent.

The protesters took out the march alleging that the Minister had intervened to shield the culprits in the case of ‘trafficking’ of children.

Several BJYM activists sustained injuries as the police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse them.

BJYM State unit general secretary K.P. Prakash Babu and another worker K. Dipin were badly injured. They have been admitted to Government Medical College Hospital here.

BJYM district unit president R. Manjunath, State committee members Prasobh Kottuli and Sudheer Kunnamangalam, district general secretaries Sinoop Raj and Babeesh Olavanna, and district vice-presidents Sujeesh Puthukudi and P. Abhilash have been admitted to Government General Hospital here.

The march began from Chalappuram, but the protesters were blocked by the police before they reached the camp premises. The police chased them with lathis when a few of the activists attempted to barge into the office.

Later, the BJYM leaders accused the Congress-led UDF government of succumbing to the pressure of the IUML in the trafficking case.
