Police ask jail superintendent to provide CCTV images

December 06, 2013 10:27 am | Updated May 12, 2016 05:01 am IST - Kozhikode:

The city police have asked the newly appointed Superintendent of Prison, Kozhikode District Jail, to furnish details of images of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the jail at Puthiyara in the city.

This is to determine if the undertrials in the killing of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T.P. Chandrasekharan used mobile phones in prison. “We have asked for the images of the CCTV cameras for the past one year. Already, the cyber cell of the Police department is investigating whether the accused had posted their activities from mobile phones on Facebook,” investigators said.

G. Sparjankumar, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, has asked mobile service operators to provide call data records and the tower location details of some of the mobile phone numbers.

Meanwhile, the investigators are still in the dark about the genuineness of the Facebook accounts of the remand prisoners – M.C. Anoop (first accused); Manoj Kumar, aka Kirmani Manoj (second accused); M.K. Sunil Kumar, aka Kodi Suni (third accused); K.K. Mohammed Shafi, aka Shafi (fifth accused); and Shijith, aka Annan Shijith (sixth accused).

Mobile phones had been used to post some of the pictures on their timeline, but a majority had been posted from the web (desktop). This could mean their Facebook accounts could be operated by a single source or a close-knit group outside the jail.

The profile picture on their Facebook accounts had the photo of Che Guevara with flags of either the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or its feeder unit, the Democratic Youth Federation of India. The last post on the Facebook accounts of both Manoj Kumar and Shijith had been made on December 1, in which they had shared photos from the post of their friends. Manoj is also a member of a group called Red Army created by one Muhammed Femil. Anoop had inter-changed a few times the profile picture from Che Guevara to DYFI flag in October. The last post was on November 10. Kodi Suni had posted from a Windows-based phone and the web.
