The Beypore police on Thursday arrested a functionary of the Popular Front of India (PFI) under Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been identified as Sajeer Mathottam, president of the Beypore division of the PFI.

Police sources said he was found to be involved in the violence following a hartal allegedly sponsored by social media groups on Monday. Meanwhile, the PFI has condemned the arrest claiming that Mr. Sajeer was dragged by the police when he was at an Akshaya Kendra along with his wife and children.
