Palliative care scheme to be launched

The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation is introducing a palliative care programme for the benefit of lesser privileged and suffering patients in the city.

The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation is introducing a palliative care programme for the benefit of lesser privileged and suffering patients in the city.

Mayor A. K. Premajam told reporters here on Wednesday that the project will be inaugurated by Minister for Urban affairs and Minority Welfare Manajalamkuzhi Ali at 10 a.m. on August 1 at the Kozhikode Town Hall. The Mayor will preside over the function.

The project being implemented as per the directions of the State government will coordinate the activities of various palliative care societies functioning within the city. The Corporation has made arrangements for medicines, vehicles, water beds, cots, wheel chairs, walkers and home care at a cost of Rs.25,80,000. The activities of the project will be based at the Health Centre Office compound at Idiyangara. Arrangements have been made at the Information cum rest centre here to coordinate the activities of the Palliative care societies, for the patients and their bystanders to register with the project, and to give necessary directions to volunteers at the right time. Two ambulances have been set up entirely for this project. The key of the ambulances will be handed over by Elamaram Kareem, MLA, while A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, will inaugurate the distribution of medicine kits. Deputy Mayor P. T. Abdul Latheef will hand over the palliative service register on the occasion. The Mayor said that 160 people have already registered for the project.
