: The 25 Akshaya counters set up at the Chief Minister’s Mass Contact Programme — Karuthal — at Malabar Christian College ground, here, on Monday received over 8,000 new applications for direct consideration of the Chief Minister. These included request for financial aid for different purposes, including medical treatment, and submission for pension and pattayam, among other things.

The Akshaya counters were active even before the mass contact programme formally began at the venue. After receiving complaints, the applicants had been provided with a special identity card and a token number to help them follow up the case with the authorities concerned. “We had received as many as 4,685 fresh applications by noon,” said an official..

The temporary counters were set up with the help of the electronics wing of the Public Works Department.

The police and other volunteers had a tough time controlling the large number of people who had turned up to submit applications. Earlier, around 10,000 people had filed their applications to the CM’s programme through various Akshaya centres across the district.

The technical help for receiving and registering the applications and complaints from the public was given by the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) at the counters, which were manned by around 85 staff members, including 11 project officers. The counters received over 8,000 applications by 8 p.m.
