The organs of a brain-dead person were harvested at the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) here on Monday. Rajeev Kumar, of Ambayathode, was declared brain-dead on Sunday, after a road accident. His wife, Pushpavalli Rajeev, gave consent for donating his organs, following which the surgeries were conducted.

Three gastro surgeons — Sajeesh Sahadevan, Rajesh Nambiar, and Rohit Raveendran — led the surgery for harvesting the kidneys. A 21-year-old girl from Panoor and a 48-year-old man from Malappuram were selected for kidney transplant.

“The transplant surgery on the 21-year-old was conducted at MIMS as she had been undergoing treatment here for five years,” a communication from MIMS said. The second surgery was conducted at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

Nisha Sajeesh and Unni Krishnan, surgeons from Comtrust Eye Hospital, conducted the surgery for harvesting the donor’s eyes. According to hospital sources, the transplant surgery will be performed later. Three months ago, a family from Kannur had expressed willingness to cooperate with organ donation. The organs of Sherly Sebastian, who died after a fall from a building, were donated then.
