A segment of the busy Palayam-Kallayi road in the city will be converted into a one-way stretch from January 1.
The one-way rule will be imposed from Palayam towards the south till Pushpa Junction, considered one of the bottlenecks on the arterial road.
Parking of vehicles will be banned on the Melepalayam road. This road will be a no-parking zone, K.P. Abdul Razaq, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic-South), said.
The one-way rule will be effected from Pushpa Junction to PVS Hospital, railway station, and Deewar Hotel Junction. Vehicles can take alternative routes – Annie Hall Road and Railway Station Link Road – and proceed along the Melepalayam road.
All vehicles, including cars, autorickshaws and two-wheelers, proceeding from Kallayi to Palayam will have to take a deviation near the Vattampoyil gate and take the Collector’s Road to reach Melepalayam.
Vehicles will not be permitted to proceed along the Collector’s Road to the southern side. Buses should halt underneath the overbridge on the Collector’s Road without causing hindrance to other vehicles. Plans have been mooted to relocate the bus shelter at PVS Hospital Junction towards the railway station.
The new rule has been implemented to ease the traffic snarls on the Palayam-Kallayi road, especially at Pushpa Junction.
Line buses coming from the southern side should take the Meenchanda Junction-Mini Bypass route to reach the bus station.
Vehicles coming from Medical College, West Hill, and Vellimadukunnu to the railway station will have to take the Palayam-MCC Bank road and proceed along Annie Hall Road.
Vehicles coming from K.P. Kesava Menon Road and the Valiyangadi road will have to take the Melepalayam-MCC Bank route and then Annie Hall Road to reach the railway station.

The one-way rule is being implemented on an experimental basis. Earlier, the traffic police had adopted a one-way rule at Nadakkavu Junction.
This was found to be largely successful in easing the congestion on the Kozhikode-Kannur road.
