May 28, 2014 12:32 pm | Updated 12:32 pm IST - KASARAGOD:

In a major initiative, 1 lakh saplings will be planted in the district in an hour on World Environment Day on June 5.

Local bodies, educational institutions, NGOs, Kudumbasree, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, youth clubs and cooperative institutions will take part in the programme organised jointly by the environment and forest departments.

The decision to this effect was taken by senior district officials at a meeting chaired by District Collector P. S. Mohammed Sagir at the collectorate here on Tuesday.

The district-level function will be inaugurated by Agriculture Minister K. P. Mohanan on the collectorate premises at 10 a.m.

The programme will be completed by 11 a.m. The participating bodies should later submit a certificate by the department head along with photos of the planted saplings, official sources said while urging the institutions concerned to ensure conservation of the saplings.

Apart from this, 1.30 lakh saplings of 14 varieties would also be planted under the initiative of Kasaragod block panchayat as part of the Haritasree programme sponsored by the Forest Department.

Those who are interested in joining the drive should send a representation listing out the varieties of the sapling through acf.sf-ksgd.for@kerala.gov.in on May 28.
