The district administration has estimated a loss of ₹24.87 crore after the cyclone Ockhi ravaged the coastal areas in Kozhikode.

According to a press release here on Wednesday, the loss incurred due to the destruction of seawalls has been put at ₹23.9 crore.

Irrigation Department officials said the lack of repair of seawalls had led to strong tidal waves destroying them completely. The department sought more funds for their reconstruction.

The Fisheries Department puts the loss due to destruction of boats and other equipment at ₹23.9 lakh. Around ₹20 lakh loss was reported due to the damage of houses and crops.

Meanwhile, the residents of Lakshadweep who had been staying in lodges in the city after the cyclonic storm, will return to their native place on Thursday.

Ship for islanders

District Collector U.V. Jose had contacted the head of the administration in the island to make arrangements for their return. Following this, a ship named ‘Cheriya Pani’ had sailed from Androth island to Beypore.
