With no fresh instances of cholera being reported, District Medical Officer V. Jayashree has said the infection was under control and urged people not to panic.
In a press release here on Monday, she said she had visited the area where the seven migrant labourers diagnosed with the disease had been staying, along with the district surveillance team. “They are responding to treatment at the Government Medical College, and no fresh cases have been reported. Officials have been asked to continue the ongoing preventive measures and keep diarrhoea cases under observation,” she added.
The official said the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management had found the presence of vibrio cholerae bacteria in a well in the area, and local residents had been told not to use the water from the well for the time being.
Meanwhile, most migrant labourers within the Mavoor grama panchayat limits have vacated their rented premises. C. Muneerath, grama panchayat president, said almost 80% of the total 250-odd labourers have left the area. Local residents had recently staged a protest asking the authorities to vacate the labourers after cholera cases were confirmed. It was decided at an all-party meeting that those staying illegally would be asked to leave.
