Njattuvela festival in Kozhikode

How much rice, on an average, a single grain of paddy is capable of producing if grown properly? If you have the answer or even a sensible guess, wait. The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) is offering an opportunity to demonstrate and share such folk wisdoms and a variety of other basic knowledge related to agriculture during a Njattuvela festival being organised by it in Kozhikode on June 21 and 22.

An agricultural quiz for students will be part of the two-day festival that will put on show a variety of planting materials including fruits, vegetables and tree saplings collected from farmers’ collectives as well as residential forums. The Njattuvela festival to be held at Muthalakkulam in the city will be a continuation of the agriculture promotion campaign Susthira Harithakam led by the science movement last year, said Mohanan Manalil, one of the key organisers of the festival.

The parishad has already contacted farmers’ collectives in the district to pool saplings for the festival. Those who have planting materials can also supply them to the festival for a decent rate. “Besides promoting a liking for cultivation among the public, it will also give good revenue to the farmers,” said Mr. Manalil.

Any farmer or residential forum that have ready-to-plant saplings of trees, fruits or vegetables including curry-leaf, mango tree, jack fruit tree, pepper, ginger and yam can contact KSSP office-bearers at phones 9446683307, 7558994799. An organising committee meeting will be held at the Parishad Bhavan in Kozhikode on Wednesday.
