Non-Plan funds for repair of district roads: Ebrahim Kunju
Work on National Highway 17 (NH-17) stretch passing through the district will be included in the Sustainable and Planned Effort to Ensure Development of Infrastructure (SPEED) project of the Public Works Department (PWD), Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju said here on Tuesday.
SPEED comprised 23 projects involving a total cost of Rs.10,000 crore, the Minister said.
At present, the NH was from Ramanattukara to Pooladikunnu.
The rest, till Vengalam, a 5-km stretch, was yet to be completed. Even the 23-km stretch till Pooladikunnu was considered highly unsafe and accident-prone with no streetlights, sources said.
As many as 100 projects had been envisaged in the past two-and-a-half years to provide better connectivity to under-developed areas of the State. Nabard schemes worth Rs.700 crore were in various stages of implementation, Mr. Kunju said after inaugurating the Nabard-aided renovation of the Kayakodi-Ellikkampara-Kolithettu road passing through the Kayakodi-Kavilumpara panchayats.
The work was estimated to cost Rs.5.15 crore.
As many as 50 other projects had been placed before Nabard for assistance, he said. Non-Plan funds of the department had been allotted for the renovation of rural roads in the district.
The funds would be released in time for the renovation of the Nadapuram-Muttungal State Highway stretch, estimated to cost Rs.26 crore, the Minister said. Action would be taken against officials who delayed projects, he said calling upon MLAs to ensure timely completion of works.
The Minister inaugurated the work on the Pavayil bridge connecting the Thalakulathur and Chelannur panchayats.
Mr. Kunju called upon the Uralungal Labour Contractors Society, which was taking up the work, to complete it in six months. The work was earlier scheduled to be completed in one year.
