The Rajasthan Grameen Mela has turned out to be a hot shopping destination in the city with avenues yet to open up for the summer vacation.
The mela that began on March 25 features a large variety of handloom and handicraft products from different parts of the country to cater to the needs of men, women, as well as children.
As in its previous editions, handloom textiles are most popular at the mela. The Chikan work, Bandhni silk saris, and batik saris are a novelty this year in additional to the usual fare of Bengal cotton, Jamdani, and other traditional varieties from different States. The Gicha silk and Tussar silk saris with embroidery are also new.
Variety fare
There is a variety in dress materials also. Kantha work, kutch work, and Kashmiri embroidery have been applied on tops and on dress materials. A large collection of pure silk and jute silk dress materials are in great demand. Readymade tops, skirts, Jaipur bed sheets, embroidered bed sheets, and quilts are also available besides men’s kurtas, jackets, and shirts in handloom fabric.
Handmade jewellery made of precious stones, tribal brass jewellery and silver filigree jewellery constitute a major part of the displayed handicraft. Wooden art from Chennapatnam, wooden carvings of Kerala, Bronze works, handmade, bags, footwear and jewellery boxes are in great demand among women. Carved grinding stones are a fresh addition to the mela this year.
A range of sweets and mouth fresheners as well as herbal medicines and seeds are also part of the mela, which concludes in a week.
