New readings of scriptures essential: religious scholar

April 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - Kozhikode:

The spiritual challenges of man changes from time to time and that calls for periodic reinterpretations and newer readings of scriptures and religious texts, says A.K.B. Nair, author of over 20 books.

Majority of his works are interpretations or simplified versions of religious texts such as Gita, Upanishads and Ramayana. “My works are mainly aimed at people who don’t know Sanskrit, but want to know the essence of Indian spirituality,” he told The Hindu .

He said that it was a popular misconception that discourses related to Upanishad and Gita were only meant for scholarly people. “They, in fact, are graspable even to the commonest of men if elucidated properly,” said Mr. Nair.

Ignoring traditions

The modern man, he said, was completely caught in a vicious maze of ever developing technology. “But that is at the cost of forgetting his own traditions and time-tested cultural heritage,” he said. “People like me are trying to make that cultural re-connect possible through our writings and speeches,” he said.
