The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) on Wednesday launched a three-day road safety awareness campaign aimed at students, voluntary organisations members and ambulance drivers.
Nearly 200 college and school students, most of whom members of the National Service Scheme and the National Cadet Corps, attended a campaign seminar at Malabar Christian College. The sessions mainly unveiled the risk factors on Kerala roads, remedial measures and steps for safe journey.
A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, who opened the session, said the mentoring and prior assessment by reputed institutions like NATPAC were crucial for the effective planning and implementation of various road-related construction works in Kerala in the attempts to address risk factors. Adoption of international standards would change the road safety scenario in the State, he said.
T.V. Sasikumar, a resource person and NATPAC consultant, said each of the trained student volunteers would identify five persons from their neighbourhood and pass on the road safety message. The chain would grow and become a mass education campaign, he said.
Pedestrian safety
On Thursday, 200 high school students in the city will attend an awareness camp at GMHSS, Kozhikode. Deputy Commissioner of Police Merin Joseph will open the session, which will focus on pedestrians’ safety aspects.
The final day would be devoted to ambulance drivers from the city, whose spot contribution for emergency life saving activities was found noteworthy by approved agencies like the Active Networking Group of Emergency Life Savers and the Traumacare Units.
