The Vadakara police have registered a case in connection with the death of a 35-year-old man who was interrogated by the Excise Department in an incident of smuggling brown sugar.
Investigators said that C. Sreejith was found dead hanging in the bedroom of his house at Chemmarathur near Vadakara on Monday. The Excise Department had summoned him to take his statements in a case relating to the seizure of brown sugar from a person hailing from Malappuram. The police said that Rasik, a native of Nilambur, was arrested last week on the charge of keeping in his possession the psychotropic substance. He was caught while handing over a packet containing brown sugar to Jerish of Nadavannur who left for Kuwait on April 12.
A probe revealed that a gang led by one Shafeek had deputed Rasik to hand over the brown sugar, weighing 951 gm, priced around Rs.1 crore, to Jerish. The brown sugar was meant to be delivered to clients in Kuwait. However, Jerish did not carry the parcel.
Excise sleuths had earlier questioned Sreejith. They had asked him to be present again on Monday for questioning. Officials had suspected that he was involved in the case. He had telephoned Jerish’s father to know about the undelivered parcel. He also received calls from Kuwait, the police said.
