The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has issued notice to the owners of around 250 private buses in Kozhikode and Kannur districts to remove audio and video players installed in the vehicles in violation of the MVD Act.
Deputy Transport Commissioner Rajeev Puthalath, who issued the notice, said only contract carriages would be allowed to install such music systems and video players as per existing rules. Violations would be dealt with seriously.
The department issued the notice upon finding that most drivers and bus owners were installing high-end music systems and video players to draw passengers. The department also considered the complaints from travellers in public adalats on the annoyance caused by the loud playing of music.
Mr. Puthalath said vehicles would be checked to trace violators of the rule from Monday. “Four squads will check vehicles and licences of those held for repeated offences will be suspended on the spot. In other cases, a fine up to Rs.1,000 will be imposed,” he added.
During a recent sitting of the Justice Chandrasekhar Das Commission, constituted to propose radical reforms to prevent road accidents,
MVD officials said passengers had complained about some drivers’ tendency to play loud music as part of road race.
