Over 500 college students from across the district turned up for the launch of ‘Campuses of Kozhikode’, an innovative project of the Kozhikode district administration aimed at attracting students to social service.

The project, which is an offshoot of the ‘Compassionate Kozhikode’ project, has 71 colleges including arts and science colleges, professional colleges and technical institutes in the district being part of it. Each participating student is expected to put in 100 hours a year for social service. They would work mainly in the fields of waste management, water conservation, palliative care and assistance to the differently abled.

The students will be trained in these disciplines by the Institute of Pallitaive Medicine and Composite Regional Centre for the differently abled.

Announcing the launch at St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri, District Collector U.V. Jose urged the students to engage in activities that would help not just themselves but those around them and the locality at large. He asked the students to be competitive in the matter, as there are prizes for the best performers.

The students were prepared for the projects through several rounds of workshops and training programmes.

The project is monitored by two teachers in each college while a panel of 20 social workers connect the activities in colleges to the district administration.

Earlier, Chakyar Hariprasad launched the logo of the project while Magician Gopinath Muthukad felicitated students of the Aavani Institute of Design who designed the logo.
