A joint survey by the Health and Local Self-Government departments has found that none of the dwellings of migrant labourers is in a habitable condition in Mavoor grama panchayat.
The survey was undertaken in all the grama panchayats in the district in the context of the outbreak of cholera cases in Mavoor in August. Officials have submitted a report in this regard to District Medical Officer V. Jayashree, who has forwarded it to the District Collector.
Sources in Mavoor grama panchayat said officials had inspected 31 buildings where migrant labourers were staying, and that none of them was found to be in a habitable condition. “Most of them were commercial buildings like one-room dwellings on top of shops. Only a few are staying in independent houses, but there are 15 to 20 people in such places. Some others were staying in under-construction buildings.”
According to sources in the collectorate, 41 grama panchayats have submitted reports. Only 13 of them were, however, found to have habitats for migrant labourers, albeit with some deficiencies.
No inspection yet
The inspection is yet to be completed in some of the above-mentioned panchayats.
The District Collector is expected to call a meeting of panchayat secretaries soon.
