Aim is to provide funds for tribespeople to buy land of their choice
A meeting of senior Revenue, Forest, and Tribal Development Department officials, chaired by Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Tribes and Youth Affairs P.K. Jayalakshmi at Mananthavady in Wayanad district on Saturday, decided to keep off middlemen from a tribal welfare project christened ‘Aashikkunna Bhoomi Adivasikku Swantham.’
The project is aimed at providing Rs.10 lakh to each landless tribal family to purchase 25 cents to one acre of land. The meeting was held in the wake of rising complaints both from the beneficiaries and the middlemen about the project, Ms. Jayalakshmi said after the meeting.
While the beneficiaries complained about exploitation by middlemen, the middlemen said the officials were not considering the land identified by them for distribution.
The meet decided to receive applications from tribesmen with a photograph of the land they wished to purchase. The Minister directed the officials to provide land to the tribesmen by the first week of August.
The Tribal Development Department had received 954 applications for the project in the district so far.
