Mental hospital to get rehabilitation centre

The Government Mental Hospital at Kuthiravattom here will soon have a rehabilitation centre inmates cured of their illness.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Minister for Social Welfare M.K. Muneer at the centre on Sunday.

The hospital would be thoroughly renovated, sources said. A special committee had been constituted to prepare a report on the steps to be taken to improve the facilities at the hospital and raise it to international standards.

The District Collector; the District Medical Officer (DMO); the Managing Director of the Handicapped Welfare Corporation; the Superintendent of the hospital; the representatives of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the National Institute of Technology, and the Karnataka Mental Health Association, the Engineer Consortium; architects; and mental health experts will be on the core committee. The committee will submit a report to the Minister in a month.

Another report will be prepared by an expert committee after visiting the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru and other major institutes of mental health.

The renovation activities will be undertaken as soon as the core committee submits the report.

The Minister visited the hospital wards and the garden being readied.
