The Indian Medical Council (IMC) has restored 50 MBBS seats that it had recently cut down from the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, citing infrastructural and academic reasons. This was informed by M.K. Raghavan, Kozhikode MP, in a fax message here on Thursday.
Various political parties, including the CPI(M)), had demanded the intervention of the State government and other authorities concerned to restore the seats to 250.
Mr. Raghavan said he had met the Medical Council of India chairman and submitted a memorandum with the demand, following pressure from different quarters. The council had earlier cut down the seats from 250 to 200 on the grounds that the college lacked in facilities and faculty.
Among other things, the council had observed that the college did not have enough paramedical staff, faculty members, classrooms, hostels, and library facilities to accommodate 250 medical students in a batch.
Seeking to revoke the decision, Mr. Raghavan had argued that the decision would seriously affect the development plans of the medical college, which were currently going ahead with various projects funded by the State and the the Central governments, the fax message said.
