Four persons arrested, three absconding
The Mavoor police have busted a gang involved in the smuggling of sand from the designated kadavaus (water frontages) of river banks using fake passes.
A team arrested four persons of the gang. The first arrest was made on August 19 during a routine check.
The police got suspicious about the passes shown by a tipper lorry driver Jamshed (25), who was transporting the sand in the lorry.
A probe revealed that the passes were bogus. Subsequently, Jamsheed was taken into custody.
The arrested three
Three others were then arrested on Wednesday night. They were Abubacker Siddique, 28, of Malayamma Pottathodi, M.T. Mohammed, 37, of Neeleswaram Polapoyil, and Rahees, 30, of Suharamansilil, Malayamma.
Three members of the gang were absconding, the police said.
The police got information about the gang after Jamsheed was arrested on August 19. The investigations revealed the direct involvement of four persons engaged in forging passes.
Rahees had obtained an original sand pass from the Kunnamangalam block on April 21. He later handed it over to his friend Abubacker and then to Mohammed.
Noufal, another person allegedly engaged in forging passes, was at large, the police said.
