The Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development (Matsyafed) will open an air-conditioned fish mart in the city at Arayidathupalam, near here, on March 2.
Minister for Panchayats and Social Justice M.K. Muneer will inaugurate the new mart.
M.K. Raghavan, MP, will formally open the sales at the mart and A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, will hand over the fishing equipment to select fishermen to mark the opening.
New trend
T.V. Ramesan, Matsyafed manager, Kozhikode district, said that the fish mart would set a new trend by making a clear departure from the conventional method of selling fish.
Hygienic ambience
“The air-conditioned mart will offer a highly hygienic ambience. It will be like purchasing from a supermarket,” Mr. Ramesan added.
Wait for over an year
Though the proposal for opening fish marts had been approved by the State government in the 2013-14 financial year, Matsyafed had to wait for more than a year to clear technicalities involved in getting the required land from the city Corporation.
The wait continued even after it got nearly Rs.1 crore from the State government for realising the venture in five locations.
