Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has stressed the need for teaching the young generation the relevance of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital and the communist struggles against capitalism in Europe in the 19th century.
Speaking after opening the 150th anniversary celebration of Das Kapital organised by the Keluettan Study and Research Centre here on Thursday, he noted that the works of Karl Marx had become more significant in the present context when the world overall was faced with problems of intolerance and unemployment.
Price rise, farmers’ suicide, corruption, attack on minorities and Dalits, and rise in communalism could be attributed to the failure of capitalism, he said.
Stating that socialism was the only alternative to capitalism, the Polit Bureau member said that Das Kapital had given rise to revolutions in many countries and it had contributed to the welfare of the working class.
Marx had given a ray of hope to the labour class who were treated worse than animals in many countries. It was Marx who corrected the Britishers by terming the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 as a freedom struggle in India.
Veteran CITU leader K.N Raveendranath, historian K.N. Ganesh, and Keluettan Study and Research Centre director and CPI(M) district secretary P. Mohanan were present.
