On June 1 this year, the Kudumbasree Mission opened in Kozhikode ‘Feminera,’ a hostel for working women and students. Six months later, the hostel is filled to its capacity, with the authorities making room for another 20 residents.

‘Feminera,’ a first of its kind venture of Kudumbasree in the State, consider neat rooms and dormitories as its biggest advantage. All rooms are bath attached and the dormitories have a separate line of bathrooms. There is unlimited supply of water from a well and borewell, besides the Corporation’s drinking water supply. Same goes for the power supply. Three-bed rooms at a monthly rent of Rs.4,500, two-bed rooms at Rs.6,000, and single-bed rooms with television at Rs.9,500 besides dormitories are available. There is a separate reading room for student residents.

Flexible timing for working women is another attraction, especially since many work on night shifts. The kitchen is managed by a four-member Kudumbasree team.

The hostel is located in a residential neighbourhood at Halwa Bazaar and Valiyangadi is just a block away. Proximity to the railway station suits many residents who take a trip back home every weekend.

With increasing demand, the management has decided to open the hostel for short stays as well. A fitness centre and a vocational training centre too is in the offing.
